Shana Moulton: Body ÷ Mind + 7 = Spirit Please join EAI for a special live performance by Shana Moulton. Wednesday, July 11, 2007 6:30 pm Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI) 535 West 22nd Street, 5th Floor New York, NY 10011 Admission free ___________________________________ EAI presents a one night, site-specific performance by Shana Moulton. Moulton will play her character, Cynthia, the fictional protagonist in her Whispering Pines series of videos. At EAI, Moulton will bring Cynthia and her strange world to life through an innovative use of sets, props, costume and video. Combining live-action and projected video, Moulton describes her performance as presenting "a series of home-made and found orthopedic devices, cosmetics and belief systems." The character, Cynthia, an anxiety-ridden hypochondriac, wears clothing embedded with medical devices and surrounds herself with inspirational new age knickknacks in order to cope with her life. Through her banal home decorations, Cynthia searches for fulfillment, purpose and salvation. Her struggles with the mundane, the eclectic and the disposable offer a unique perspective on the relationship between spirituality and consumerism in contemporary society. Moulton's presentation will at different points approximate a personal growth workshop, dance recital, instructional video and fairytale. A number of videos from Moulton's Whispering Pines series will be incorporated into the performance, including Whispering Pines 7, Electric Blanket Temple Altar, and Moulton's most recent video, Whispering Pines 4. ___________________________________ Shana Moulton Shana Moulton works in video and performance. Moulton studied at the University of California, Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, where she received her MFA. Moulton has also recently attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine, and studied at De Ateliers in Amsterdam. Her video work has been screened and exhibited internationally, including at The Armory Show Art Fair, New York; Smack Mellon, Brooklyn; Loop ’05 Video Festival, Barcelona; Rencontres internationales Paris/Berlin, Paris; Aurora, Edinburgh; Dark Light Festival, Dublin; Impakt Festival, Utrecht; Internationale Kurzfilmtage, Oberhausen; Canada Gallery, New York; and Bellwether, New York.
