Serious Games

Beryl Graham curated "Serious Games" for the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne and the Barbican Art Gallery in London in 1996 and 1997. One of the earliest presentations of interactive media, this exhibition included a range of works by artists from the United Kingdom, Japan and the United States: Diller and Scofidio, Ritsuko Taho, Char Davies, Ann Whitehurst, Toshio Iwai, Bill Seaman, Harwood, and Jim Campbell. A guiding interest of the exhibition was human interaction and the level to which gallery visitors could meaningfully engage with the artwork's content through participating in creating its ultimate form. Rather than emphasizing the use of technology per se, the artists in the exhibition used a variety of media - from virtual reality set-ups to paper, earth and water. Six of the projects were shown for the first time in the UK in this exhibition.
