Annotated Plans for an Evacuation
Applying the formal manipulations of the plastic arts to moving-image tableaux, Hubbard creates witty and poignant compositions that toy with viewer expectations. Here his material is a used Ford Tempo, turned into a moving composition with the addition of humble artists' supplies, such as styrofoam, spray-paint, and spackle. A jerry-rigged dolly, attached by straps to the side of the car, grants viewers a steady profile view of the composition as it roves along, carrying Hubbard on his clumsy but formally interesting evacuation. The artist stops to augment his vehicle with more aesthetically interesting survival supplies—empty oil and gas cans, a sheet of metal, a water jug—all arranged just so on the exterior of his Tempo. This piece was included in the 2010 Whitney Biennial, where it was displayed as a projection against a free-standing wall.
