Mishima in Mexico

2012, 13:57 min, color, sound, HD video

Made in collaboration with Alexander Segade, Mishima in Mexico is a reflexive experimental melodrama, transposing Yukio Mishima’s novel Thirst For Love to the modish interior of Mexico City’s iconic Camino Real Hotel. Wu Tsang and Segade play a director and writer negotiating their own retelling of Mishima’s work, which deals with an unrequited longing between a woman and her gardener. As the two work through the creative process and discuss the strange nature of desire, the boundaries between performer and character, reality and fiction become porous. The behind-the-scenes intimacy brings to mind the work of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, whose Beware of a Holy Whore similarly explores the relationships of dramatists sequestered in a hotel, situating Tsang in a global radical queer tradition.
