Monitor

1999, 49 min loop, color, sound

Monitor continues Benglis' investigation into the contract between image and audience, confronting the viewer with the blurred apparition of a single eye, positioned above a vast set of lips that are silently opening and closing. The screen subject is reduced to a cyclopean figure that can only enact a kind of ritualized interaction as it goes through the motions of surveillance and communication.
