SISKYAVI - The place of Chasms

1991, 28 min, color, sound

Masayesva presents the ceramic traditions of Native Americans in a provocative context: the cultural clash of Western civilization and one of the oldest, most enduring tribal groups in North America. SISKYAVI addresses the interpretation of tradition through the dynamics of intercultural conflicts over terms of meaning and value. Reflecting the current debate over the return of artifacts to Native American tribes, and implicates the practice by Western civilizations of appropriating religious artifacts from around the world in the name of Science and Art.
