The Rolling Stones Free Concert, 1969

2002, 18:55 min, b&w, sound

In this black and white Portapak document, Schneider creates a countercultural home movie of the infamous Altamont rock concert in 1969. Schneider's document, which includes footage of Santana, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and Crosby, Stills & Nash, culminates in riveting scenes of the Rolling Stones performing onstage while guarded by the Hell's Angels. Schneider records Mick Jagger and the Hell's Angels from within the crowd, lending his footage a sense of immediacy and tension. With its raw sound, low-light imagery, and hand-held camera, Schneider's document is a personal view of a pivotal moment in rock and roll history, and an alternative time capsule of the late 1960s.
