A Loft

2010, 16:48 min, color, silent, HD video

In A Loft, Jacobs applies his exacting digital techniques to footage of his New York City working and living space. Jacobs' take on the "artist's studio" portrait shows the important early influence of abstract painter Hans Hoffman on Jacobs, and his continued interest in abstract aesthetics and visual phenomena. The loft, crowded with books and film equipment, is rendered in vivid digital colors, inverted, and broken into planes that flatten the space, while Jacobs' signature stroboscopic effects give the illusion of three-dimensionality. The result is a deconstruction of his most personal physical space and an intensification of its psychological dimensions, akin to Van Gogh's studies of his own studio.
