Charles Moulton's Nine Person Precision Ball Passing

1986, 8 min, color, sound

Nine Person Precision Ball Passing is a synchronized dance performance by avant-garde choreographer Charles Moulton. Nine dancers in a grid formation repeatedly pass nine balls to one another in formal and dynamic geometries of mechanized movement, alternately criss-cross, back-forth, up-down. Choreographing with the camera, Blumberg meticulously traces these mathematical intricacies, then transforms this collective feat via computer processing into a tic-tac-toe grid of repeated images.
