Untitled (Spring 94)

1994, 30 min, color, sound

Combining camcorder video and Pixelvision, Bag begins to formulate her distinctive performance-based parodies in Untitled (Spring 94), as she pinpoints the banality of mid-1990s' pop phenomena—the prose of Mick Jagger's autobiography, "art" for sale through Columbia House's mail-order service, and trademarked menu items at McDonalds. Here Bag employs a series of wigs to inhabit a single archetype, the teenage girl in her bedroom. Using her camera as a mirror to gaze in (as she lip-syncs to Pearl Jam, dresses up as Vampira and performs an a capella rendition of Salt-n-Pepa's "Shoop") and a diary (for discussing such teen-culture emergencies as the death of River Phoenix and Nirvana's release of "In Utero"), Bag registers a mix of dead seriousness and hearty sarcasm.
