Peace and Anwar Sadat

Ulysses Jenkins
1985, 21:59 min, color, sound

Description

With this 1985 piece performed by Othervisions Studio, Ulysses Jenkins pays tribute to the late Egyptian President and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Anwar Sadat, who was assassinated in 1981 after he negotiated a truce with Israel during the Camp David Accords. In the video, Jenkins, alongside Harry DeMoss and Vinsula Kara as the Agents of Peace, perform in front of a green screen, which projects cosmic images of interplanetary exploration intercut with fleeting glimpses of contemporary Egypt. In an interview, Jenkins notes, "I'm trying to push this idea about … the notion of peace—and the fact that Anwar Sadat had gotten murdered for peace, and I end up asking the audience to consider a more peaceful demonstration as we go forward."
