This eternalism by Ken Jacobs depicts Asian soldiers traveling through rivers and railways within a mysterious jungle terrain, encountering native villagers and monkeys along the way. Another Occupation is a forceful condemnation of the growing military industrial complex and its dehumanizing effect upon soldiers; through the hallucinatory stroboscopic flickering, the film summons the apparitions of Asian warfare of the 20th century to convey the continent’s lingering trauma from its past. In his title cards, Jacobs observes, “The most debased form of slave is the soldier. Even field hands weren’t required to dress alike, or sleep or defecate in rows… As job programs go, the military life is the worst a nation can offer.”
