Lisa and Joey in Connecticut

"You've Come Back!" "You're Still Here!"
Ken Jacobs
1965, 21:59 min, color, silent, 8mm film on video

Description

This home video endeavor by Ken Jacobs tours the inside of Alfred Leslie’s New York City apartment, with appearances by his then-wife Lisa Bigelow and young son Joey as they prepare to move to Connecticut. Mickey and Minnie Mouse make a cameo via the Disney short Mickey in Arabia (1932), interwoven with footage of Alfred and Lisa packing their belongings into a moving van. By intercutting the animated short with the real-life disintegrating marriage between Alfred and Lisa, Jacobs creates an intimate portrait of one of the greatest artists of the New York Underground.

Writes Jacobs, “We were mighty tight there for awhile with Alfred and Lisa, much laughter—oh, the mortality of New York relations, or is it art world, or is it the 20th century… This time I know for sure it wasn’t me. So we suffered Alfred and Lisa’s drawing apart, and that’s the inside dope on this outwardly buoyant film.”

January 1965. With: Lisa, Joey, Alfred Leslie. 8mm by Ken Jacobs.
